The Pros and Cons of Hiring a Wedding Planner

Have you looked forward to planning your wedding day for as long as you can remember? Some brides and grooms love the idea of picking out each detail, planning every moment, and creating a day that is entirely their own. For others, it may seem too overwhelming to know where to start!

For the bride that isn’t detail-oriented, or for the groom who doesn’t have time to sweat the small stuff, hiring a wedding planner may be a huge help… but it does come with its own set of pros and cons. If you’re thinking about hiring a wedding planner to help with your big day, here are a few things to consider.

Pros:

They think about the details (so you don’t have to)

Wedding planners are all about the details. If you’re not a detail-oriented person, this can be a match made in wedding heaven. From table settings and timing to seating charts and decorations, the tasks that can easily overwhelm even the most calm and collected bride are just everyday decisions for a wedding planner. Even with all the checklists you can think of, there may still be details you miss that a wedding planner won’t.

They Know the Industry

When wedding planners aren’t planning weddings, they’re networking. They’re researching. They’re watching the prices and trends that you only check when it’s time to plan your big day. From the most reliable vendors to the best deals on florals, a wedding planner can get you the industry insider information you wouldn’t be able to get on your own.

They know how much things cost and if you’re being overcharged and how long things should take and where you can find the things you need. This can be especially helpful if you’re throwing your wedding in an unfamiliar city.

If Something Goes Wrong, They’ll Fix It

There is always the fear that something major will go wrong on your wedding day and you, the bride, will have to deal with fixing it. If you hire a wedding planner, it becomes their job to worry about all the things that could go wrong — and to handle them if they happen, so all you have to worry about is walking down the aisle.

The Cons

The Cost

While wedding planners can sometimes help save you money by knowing where to find the discounts and giving you insider knowledge to the best deals and values in the area, there is always the cost of the planner to consider. Some planners charge a flat rate and some charge an hourly rate. While the idea of someone else taking care of all the little details for the big day might be appealing, it’s important to figure the cost into your budget to consider whether it’s something you can afford.

You Wedding May Not Feel As Personal

With someone else taking care of the details, your wedding day might end up feeling a little bit like someone else’s day. While you obviously have final say over all the decisions, with someone else taking the reins, it can feel like their day more than yours. To avoid this, make sure you’re very clear on your vision for your day from the very beginning. And if you want a day that feels totally yours, maybe stick to planning it yourself.

It Can Be Hard To Find Someone You Connect With

It can be hard to find the right person to plan your wedding because no one else is you. If you have a specific vision, no matter how much experience they have, it can be hard to explain that vision to someone else and hope they can bring it to life. You can start looking for a planner right away to make sure you have time to establish a connection and get to know each other, but if you’re worried about planning the day with someone you don’t have a connection with, you might want to skip the planner.
